Hot rolling refers to a process of processing metal materials at high temperatures. Usually, after the metal material is heated to above its recrystallization temperature (generally between 1000°C and 1300°C), it is rolled through rollers to change its shape, size and structure.

Hot rolling refers to a process of processing metal materials at high temperatures. Usually, after the metal material is heated to above its recrystallization temperature (generally between 1000°C and 1300°C), it is rolled through rollers to change its shape, size and structure. The hot rolling process is widely used in steel production, mainly for the manufacture of bulk steel products, such as steel plates, steel strips, steel pipes, etc.
Hot rolling process
Heating: First, the metal raw material (such as steel billet) is heated to a high temperature so that its temperature reaches above the recrystallization temperature, so that the metal has good plasticity and is easy to roll.
Rolling: The heated metal billet is rolled through a series of rollers to gradually deform it to the required thickness, width and shape. After hot rolling, the metal will become more uniform and compact, the grain size will become smaller, and the mechanical properties and processability of the material will be improved.
Cooling: The rolled metal is usually hardened by natural cooling or forced cooling to form different product forms, such as steel coils, steel plates, steel strips, etc.
Finished product cutting: After cooling, the metal is cut into appropriate lengths and eventually forms finished products of different specifications.
Characteristics of hot rolling
High temperature processing: Hot rolling is carried out at a high temperature of the metal material, which increases the plasticity of the material and makes it easy to process. The usual temperature range is 1000°C to 1300°C.
Mass production: The hot rolling process is suitable for mass production, especially when producing large steel plates, steel strips and other products, with the advantages of high production efficiency and low cost.
Dimension change: Hot rolling can change the size and shape of the metal, and is usually used to produce thicker steel plates and steel coils. Through hot rolling, the shape of the metal material can be changed from a heavy billet to a thin and wide steel plate or steel coil.
Surface quality: Due to the high temperature and oxidation, there will be a certain oxide layer on the surface of the hot-rolled steel, so the surface may be rough. Further processing (such as pickling) is required to remove the oxide scale.
Processability and strength: The hot rolling process usually improves the plasticity of the metal, making it easy to process later. At the same time, hot-rolled steel usually has better toughness and lower strength.
Application of hot rolling
Steel plates and steel coils: Hot rolling is widely used in the production of bulk steel, such as thick steel plates, thin steel plates, steel strips, etc. These steels can be used in many fields such as construction, ships, machinery, and automobiles.
Steel sections: Hot rolling is also commonly used to produce various steel sections, such as H-shaped steel, I-shaped steel, angle steel, etc. These steel sections are widely used in construction and engineering.
Steel pipes and bars: Through hot rolling, steel pipes and steel bars of various diameters and lengths can be produced for use in oil, natural gas, transportation and other fields.
