According to Thai media reports, the Thai rebar market continues to heat up. Driven by demand for high-quality electric arc furnace (EAF) steel, total production of rebar and structural steel from January to May 2025 increased by more than 18% year-on-year, rising from an average of 290,000 tons per month in the same period last year to approximately 350,000 tons.
Data shows that during the same period, the total imports of EAF and blast furnace rebar surged from 100,000 tons to 275,000 tons, representing a 174% increase. To address the surging demand, the association has urged member companies to accelerate production of T-shaped and non-T-shaped rebar. It is projected that production capacity will increase by 45% in the third quarter compared to the beginning of the second quarter, reaching 200,000 tons per month, and is expected to rise to 280,000 tons in the fourth quarter.
Chai Charoen, President of the Thai Electric Arc Furnace Long Steel Manufacturers Association, pointed out that high-quality electric arc furnace steel is highly favored for its stability and reliability, driving a significant increase in market demand. However, producing high-quality rebar entails higher costs, so rebar prices may adjust in line with market fluctuations in the future. He urged relevant companies to set reasonable prices to ensure industry stability. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Commerce has designated rebar as a controlled commodity to prevent unfair trade practices.
Furthermore, some rebar produced using non-mainstream processes despite being submitted for early bidding has raised market concerns. The association recommends that the government, enterprises, and regulatory authorities collaborate to promote the healthy development of the rebar market and jointly formulate sustainable solutions. Under the association's initiative, some previously idle factories have gradually resumed production to alleviate supply-demand pressures and meet the growing demand from the construction sector in the second half of the year.
